DYLAN

Dylan coaxed the tiny, smelly truck back to the safehouse where Beth, Kyle, and Pepper stayed. The near-death experience he’d averted at the expense of the cannibals gnawed at his mind and caused him concern for his family.

Each turn was taken at full speed in the dying sunlight. The bald tires fought to maintain traction on the dusty roadway as Dylan gripped the steering wheel tighter.

The boxes of food and supplies in the bed jostled about, creating a symphony of noises heard inside the cab. He paid the din no mind, focusing on nothing else but reaching his wife and son.

Up ahead, he spied the home in the failing light. All looked as it should from the outside. No vehicles were parked in the street in front of the house and driveway. No one skulked around the exterior of the home or the property in general. It eased his mind, some.

He braked and tore into the driveway, then raced to the rear of the dwelling. His foot smashed the brake, sending the pickup sliding across the dirt until it stopped.

Dylan shoved the shifter into park and then killed the engine.

As he removed the keys from the ignition, the door to the home flung open.

Beth stood in the doorway, perplexed and anxious.

He shoved the driver's door open and got out of the truck. “Are you and Kyle okay?”

“We’re fine. What’s the matter?” Beth looked to the truck, then back to him. “That’s not Griffin’s truck. Where is he?”

“So, you haven’t seen anyone around the property, then?” Dylan moved quickly to the entrance.

“You’re scaring me. What happened out there?” Beth asked again as Dylan hugged her. “You didn’t do something to Griffin, did you?”

“Lord no.” He released Beth and gently pushed her into the home, shut the door behind them, and locked it. “Nothing like that. He stayed behind in town to find some fuel.”

“Okay, then why are you acting all crazy?”

“Where’s Kyle at?” Dylan looked in the kitchen and living room for his son but didn’t spot him.

“He got bored because I wouldn’t let him go outside so he’s digging through some of the boxes in the back bedroom.” Beth knitted her brow and demanded answers. “Will you please tell…”

The blood on the side of Dylan’s head caught her eye. She latched onto his jaw and turned his head to get a better view.

“Christ. You’re bleeding.”

Dylan had forgotten about being bashed in the head. To him, it was just another wound to add to the pile. All he cared about was getting home and not his well-being. “It’s fine. I’ll live.”

“Famous last words, Harris.” She waited for his explanation. “Are you going to tell me what happened out there?”

“We encountered some trouble at one of the grocery stores in town. Well, I did.” Dylan stormed by her toward the hallway and scanned the corridor for Kyle.

Beth made her way to him and asked, “Who were they?”

He turned about to face her and whispered. “Cannibals.”

Her jaw dropped in shock. She was speechless, unable to form words.
